I am NOT saying that Conservatives should sit back and wait for the pendulum to fall. In fact, I am saying the exact opposite. If the Conservatives want a revival they have to be prepared. In order to be prepared, the youth must be ready. This is a very difficult situation though, for three main reasons that I will list. As I am a young Conservative, I am deeply acquainted with these issues.:)
Here they are:
1.) It is not fashionable to be a young Conservative.
And yes, I chose the word "fashionable" for a reason. Have you seen all the peace signs plastered on anything and everything? You'd think we were living in the 60's or 70's with the way peace signs are being tossed around. What about the *insert breathy voice* "Make Love Not War" shirts? Not enough? There are still the Obama shirts, totes, underwear, etc. Being a Conservative is just not cool. Well, God forbid any adolescent have a different point of view from their peers!
2.) True Conservative thought is scarce.
Unfortunately, as there are no William F. Buckleys or Ronald Reagans challenging people's beliefs today, there is practically no one discussing Conservative thought. The vast majority of the media is biased liberally, and there really is no Conservative carrying the torch for future generations. Luckily, as the National Review lives on, there is at least one sure fire resource for Conservatives.
3.) There is confusion between Conservative and Republican.
Number 2 and number 3 go hand-in-hand. Many people do not realize that these are completely separate entities. Why? Because the Republican party used to agree completely with Conservative ideals. Recently though, the Republican party has started to leave its Conservative base and has therefore created confusion. This is a problem because when people think that Conservative and Republican are synonyms, they also think that people like John McCain are Conservative, and who wants to be one then? :D
So there you have it! I hope you enjoyed my first post. If you have any questions or comments, I would be happy to read them.
Au Revoir for now!
